Chuck Pagano thought he blew Colts coaching job getting drunk on wine
Chuck Pagano is everyone who has ever woken up after too much wine with a string of missed calls and sense of panic.
Pagano appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday, and recalled how he thought he had missed out on the head coaching job with the Indianapolis Colts.
As Pagano tells it, the Ravens, for whom he was the defensive coordinator, lost the 2011-12 AFC Championship game to the Patriots. Then, on no sleep, he flew to get interviewed by Jim Irsay and the Colts. Then he flew home, drinking a bottle of wine and passing out.
“I woke up, 6-7 a.m., and looked at my phone and had three missed calls from Mr. Irsay,” Pagano said. “I’m like ‘oh s–t, I blew this.’ I’d gotten drunk on a bottle of wine and I missed his calls. But he called the next day, we talked for about an hour, and he offered me the job.”
Pagano said he called his wife to get her permission to take the job. At first she thought he was joking, and then told him to “call him [Irsay] back before he changes his friggin’ mind!”
Warning: Graphic Language
Pagano coached the Colts from 2012-17, with a regular season record of 53-43. McAfee was his punter for the first four seasons.
