Hoops roundup: Ninilchik boys roll to Homer tourney title

The Ninilchik boys and Redington girls wrapped up titles at the Homer Winter Carnival in Homer on Saturday.

The Wolverines moved to 13-0 by defeating Homer (8-7) by the score of 86-27. Both teams came into the game 2-0 at the tournament. Ninilchik has now gone undefeated at tournaments at Soldotna, Seward and Homer this season.

Jaylin Scott had 18 for Ninilchik, while Landon Colburn had 17, Cole Moore had 14, Lukah Kalugin had 12, Justin Trail had eight, Blake Lemons had five and Cody Blossom had two.

For Homer, Carter Tennison had 12, Tim Hatfield had six, Peyton Edens, Lance Seneff, Noah Irons and Ryan Carroll had two, and Lucas Story had one.

The Redington girls wrapped up a 3-0 run through the tourney by topping Galena 61-16. Lexi Seymore had 19 for the Huskies, while Destiny Simmons had 12. Alice Tinker led Galena with six.

Also Saturday, the Homer girls wrapped up second place by defeating Ninilchik 42-13. Homer is 7-6, while Ninilchik is 3-13.

Sydney Shelby had 13 for Homer, while Kaylin Anderson had 10, Delilah Harris had four, Minadora Reutov and Hannah Stonorov had three, Bethany Engebretsen, Lillie Mac Kuhn, Olivia Glasman and Sophie Ellison had two and Mel Morris had one.

For Ninilchik, Riley Tucker had five, Zoya Fefelov and Rian Ofstand had three, and Autumn Calabrese had two.

Finally on Saturday, the Redington boys topped Galena 60-36. Logan Seymore had 17 for the Huskies, while Wayde Bowman had 12 and Bryce Murdock had 11. For Galena, Ian Gsmailka had 12, while Aren Sommers and Keldon Melton had 10.

Friday started out with the Galena girls coming back to defeat Ninilchik 46-42. Ninilchik led 20-6 after a quarter and 26-15 at halftime. But Galena cut it to 35-34 after three quarters.

Alice Tinker led the comeback with 20 points. For Ninilchik, Rian Ofstad had 12, Zoya Fefelov had nine, Rebecca Okonek had seven, Autumn Calabrese and Riley Tucker each had six and Dakotah Burh had one.

Friday, the Ninilchik boys topped Galena 86-26, with every player on the Ninilchik roster scoring.

Cole Moore paced the Wolverines with 21 while Jaylin Scott had 17, Justin Trail had 12, Landon Colburn had eight, Lukah Kalugin and Blake Lemons each had six, Carter Lemons had three, and Wyatt McCloskey, Cody Blossom and Rowan Mahoney.

For Galena, Keldon Melton had 10.

Also Friday, the Redington girls defeated Homer 44-36. Alizae Crume paced the Huskies with 16 points, while Lexi Seymore added 14.

For Homer, Delilah Harris had 11, Sydney Shelby had 10, Sophie Ellison had seven, Kaylin Anderson and Mel Morris each had three, and Hannah Stonorov had two.

Late Friday, the Homer boys defeated Redington 57-46. Homer trailed 15-13 after the first quarter, then tied the game at 28 at halftime and 38 headed to the fourth quarter.

Carter Tennison had 15 for the Mariners, while Noah Irons had 13, Tim Hatfield had 11, Peyton Edens had 10, Ryan Carroll had six and Braden Huffman had two.

For the Huskies, Logan Seymore led the way with 15 points, while Cort Sandefur had 12.

For the girls, Redington’s Lexi Seymore was MVP and Galena’s Rhianne Isaac, Homer’s Sydney Shelby, Homer’s Delilah Harris, Galena’s Alice Tinker and Redington’s Ali Crume were all-tournament. Harris won the free throw competition, while Shelby won the 3-point competition.

For the boys, Ninilchik’s Lukah Kalugin was MVP, while Redington’s Logan Seymore, Ninilchik’s Landon Colburn, Homer’s Carter Tennison, Homer’s Peyton Edens and Galena’s Keldon Melton were all-tournament. Ninilchik’s Cody Blossom won the free throw contest, while Edens won the 3-point competition.

Grace Christian Hardwood Classic

The Nikiski girls took fifth in the tournament in Anchorage after a 65-34 loss to Tikigaq left the Bulldogs at 1-15 this season.

Jennifer Nash had 22 for Tikigaq, while Kahlia Lane had 19. For Nikiski, Kinlee Jeffreys had 12, Rylee Ellis and Emma Weeks had six, Maggie Grenier had four, and Shelby Burman and Leora McCaughey had three.

Nikiski had lost 63-20 to Grace Christian in Friday’s semifinals.

Colony girls 67, Soldotna 34

The host Knights finished a Northern Lights Conference weekend sweep Saturday. SoHi is 1-6 in the NLC and 6-12 overall.

Colony was led by Hallie Clark with 21 and Emma Hopkins with 17.

For the Stars, Kaitlyn McAnelly had 10, Jolie Widaman had six, Ellie Burns had four, Katelyn Morrison had three, Montana Fischer, Alex Lee, Morgan Lemm, Adarra Hagelund and Sadie Lane had two, and Tanner Inman had one.

Colony boys 59, Soldotna 58

The host Knights held on for a Saturday Northern Lights Conference victory to drop the Stars to 0-7 in the league and 6-14 overall.

Colony led 19-12 after a quarter, 33-19 at the half, 47-30 after three quarters. The Knights led by as much as 19, but the Stars stormed back by winning the final quarter 28-12. Colony held on by making 8 of 9 free throws in the final period.

Harvey Pullen led Colony with 17 points, while Jayce Underwood had 14 and Blake Dinkel had 10.

For SoHi, Ethan Sewell poured in 25, including 17 in the final quarter. Also for the Stars, Nate Johnson had 10, Maleda Denbrock had eight, Will Inman had six, Blake Inger had three, and Andrew Pieh, Jakob Brown and Brock Wilson had two.

Colony girls 55, Soldotna 32

The host Knights picked up a Northern Lights Conference victory Friday, leading 29-10 at halftime.

Hallie Clark had 20 to pace the Knights, while Alycia Shelley added 14.

For Soldotna, Kaitlyn McAnelly had eight, Adarra Hagelund had six, Alex Lee had five, Montana Fischer and Tanner Inman each had four, and Katelyn Morrison and Morgan Lemm had two.

Colony boys 60, Soldotna 37

The host Knights notched a Northern Lights Conference victory Friday, taking a 43-16 lead at halftime.

Jayce Underwood had 16 for Colony, while Kash Luce had 14 and Harvey Pullen added 10.

For Soldotna, Ethan Sewell had 13, Zac Buckbee and Jakob Brown each had eight, Nate Johnson and Brock Wilson had three, and Maleda Denbrock had two.

Kenai girls 50, Seward 28

The visiting Kardinals won in the Peninsula Conference on Saturday. Kenai is 1-2 and 10-6, while Seward is 2-2 and 6-8.

Logan Satathite had 14 for the Kardinals, while Emma Beck had 11, Amber Nash had 10, Erin Koziczkowski had seven, Riley Sparks had four and Malerie Nunn had two.

For Seward, Shelby Sieminski had 16, Lena Jagielski had 10 and Hannah Schilling had two.

Kenai boys 42, Seward 38

The visiting Kardinals won in the Peninsula Conference to avenge a mid-December loss to Seward. Kenai is 1-2 and 4-11, while Seward is 1-3 and 4-10.

Seward fell into a 10-2 hole after a quarter, 23-13 hole at halftime and 28-22 hole after three quarters.

Jakob Kvasnikoff and Wade James had 13 for Kenai, while Eli McCubbins had seven, Joe Hamilton had four, Ky Calvert had three and Luke Armstrong had two.

For Seward, Tommy Cronin had 27, Bergen Davis had six, and Nick Ambrosiani, Ben Ambrosiani and Kupono Albino had two.

Seward girls 39, Birchwood 13

The host Seahawks took down Birchwood in nonconference action Friday.

Shelby Sieminski paced Seward with 15, while Lena Jagielski and Robin Cronin had six, Hailey Ingalls had five, Renee Elhard had four, Annika Nilsson had two and Hannah Schilling had one.

Ella Phillips paced Birchwood with seven.

Seward boys 54, Glennallen 44

The host Seahawks toppled the Panthers on Friday in nonconference action, taking a 30-7 lead at halftime.

Tommy Cronin paced Seward with 15, while Nick Ambrosiani and Bergen Davis had 12. Also for the Seahawks, Ozzy Deal had eight and Ben Ambrosiani had seven.

For Glennallen, Hunter Terrel led all scorers with 19.

CIA boys 44, Holy Rosary 20

The visiting Eagles notched a Peninsula Conference victory Saturday to move to 1-1 in the league and 6-6 overall.

Ian McGarry had 21 points to pace the Eagles, while Jeremiah Dillingham had 10, Abraham Henderson had six, Brady Baeten had four and William Smith had two.
